Miss World 2001, the 51st edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 16 November 2001 at the Super Bowl of Sun City Entertainment Centre in Sun City, South Africa. 93 contestants from all over the world competed for the title. Priyanka Chopra of India crowned her successor Agbani Darego of Nigeria at the end of the event.[1] This is the first time Nigeria won the title of Miss World.
Background
Selection of participants
Contestants from 93 countries and territories were selected to compete in the competition. Two of these delegates were designees after the original contestant withdrew.
Karol Inés de la Torre, Miss Mundo Colombia 2001, resigned due to accusations of her being married. She was replaced by Jeisyl Amparo Velez.[2] Miss Latvia 2001, Gunta Rudzīte was expected to compete in Miss World 2001, but was replaced by Miss Latvia 1999–2000 Dina Kalandārova due to undisclosed reasons.[3]
The 2001 edition saw the debut of Malawi, and the returns of Antigua and Barbuda, China, Guyana, Hawaii, Latvia, Macedonia, Nicaragua, Sint Maarten, Thailand, and Uganda.[4] Hawaii last competed in 1959, Antigua and Barbuda in 1991, China in 1994, Macedonia in 1996, Uganda in 1997, Nicaragua and 1998, and the others in 1999.
The Bahamas, Belarus, Chinese Taipei, Curacao, Denmark, Guatemala, Honduras, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Nepal, Paraguay, and Sri Lanka withdrew. Miss Teen Bahamas 2001, Kiara Sherman had to cancel her participation in Miss World 2001 due to lack of time and preparation, and because she wasn't the official winner.[5] Miss Belarus 2000, Anna Stychinskaya did not compete due underage and lack of interest.[6][7] Miss Denmark 2001, Maj Petersen did not compete due to Sponsorship problems.[8] Went to Miss World 2003 instead.[9] Miss Egypt World 2001 Sally Shaheen and Miss Uzbekistan 2001 Olesya Loshkareva did not participate in Miss World 2001 as scheduled due to the instability of the Middle East following the terrorist September 11 attacks in New York.[10] Miss Kazakhstan 2001, Gulmira Makhambetova did not compete for unknown reasons.[11] Miss Moldova 2001, Nadezhda Corcimari was supposed to participate in Miss World 2001, but due to her young age the Miss World officials refused her participation.[12] Miss Swaziland 2001, Glenda Mabuza was expected to compete, but the local organizers could not reach an agreement with the franchise. Chinese Taipei, Curacao, Guatemala, Honduras, Nepal, Paraguay, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Zambia withdrew after their respective organizations failed to hold a national competition or appoint a delegate.[13]
