Deaths in 2023 was one of the most-read Wikipedia articles in 2023, with over 48 million views. It is important that such a high-profile article have factual information presented in a consistent format. Q: Why are there redlinks or redirects (deceased subject with no Wikipedia article) listed in the article? A: Many notable people die before a Wikipedia article is written about them. The regular editors of this page have agreed that a death notice without an English-language article may remain for one month after the death, so that an article may develop. If there is no article after one month, then the death notice is removed from the list. Q: Why is each death sourced by a simple citation only? A: Each month, over 1000 deaths are reported. If the "cite news" template were used in each entry, the page would be slower to load as each instance of the template is rendered. Editors have decided by consensus to use a simpler cite in the form <ref></ref>. Q: Why are dead animals sometimes listed in the article? A: Many animals (like Lonesome George) achieve notability similar to humans during their life. This article reports the death of any notable biological life with its own article, not just humans. Blogs and social media sites are generally considered to be unreliable. Every death listed must be supported by a reference from a reliable, independent source. Q: A new month started five days ago. Why are deaths in the old month still appearing here? A: It takes some time for deaths to be reported in the media and published here. Editors have agreed to keep the old month listed in the article for seven days after the new month begins. After that time, the "old" deaths are transferred to the article Deaths in <old month name>. Q: Why is there sometimes a date without entries at the top of the page? A: A new date is added after a new day starts in the time zone that first starts a new day. • January 22 - János Toldi, 96, Hungarian Olympic sprint canoer
• January 25 - Rick France, 85, British speedway rider. (Death sourced on his page by Facebook)
• March - Tommy Duncan, 87, Scottish footballer (Death sourced on his page by Twitter)
• April - Danny O'Donnell, 85, Scottish footballer (Brentford, Brechin City, Tonbridge)
• April 14 - Blackie Wangerin, 89, American racecar driver
• April 28 - Michael J. Roads, 87, British-born Australian author

The account is verifiably theirs given that it is linked at the bottom of the home page on their website, thus passes Wiki guidelines on using Twitter/X as a source. Jim Price: Dead or Alive?

Looking over this list, should Jim Price be on it at all, as even his article doesn't indicate he's dead? A brief search doesn't turn up anything to confirm that he is either 2A02:8012:227B:0:18DE:830D:C096:71A (talk) 13:03, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

The person who added his name here indicated his death was stated via forums and social media. In my opinion it's okay to leave him here given that. Unless something comes up in those areas saying the announcement was wrong or something. That's the purpose of this thread, to catalogue deaths needing a strong source that have been at the least verifiably deemed deceased in the means we can't utilize. Hello all. Jim Price is supposed to have died in Pasadena in February 2023. We have a James William Price born in July 1945 living in Pasadena on TruePeopleSearch. If he died more than one year ago I think he wouldn't be on TruePeopleSearch anymore. What did you think? --Danielvis08 (talk) 22:31, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Frankly, I would not know whether TruePeopleSearch is deemed to be a reliable source. What I do know is that it seemingly is not available to view by Europeans. I suspect that 'James William Price' is hardly a unique name, so we can not be certain if it is he. There were 'death notices' posted on social media and web forums (all not reliable) around the time of his demise. They may have all been bogus, and that is why I did not edit his article nor post his 'death' here. It seems to me that he had a sizeable contribution to rock/pop music in the 1970s, so it seems logical that his death would have attracted media attention, but these days mainstream media seem to focus elsewhere. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 23:32, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

Just to add a belated PS. here. If editors would care to take a look at the Jim Price article's editing history, you will see a few unsourced efforts, largely by IPs, trying to insert 'death details'. If this was purely vandalism, I would proffer that choosing a 78 year old to 'kill off', would gain considerably less kudos than reckoning Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga, or whoever is the latest pop sensation, had suddenly popped their clogs. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 22:21, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

I've seen worse. Countless articles use the frowned-upon social media sites Facebook and Twitter/X as sources almost as a matter of course, where they should not.
