I am a student librarian and enjoy writing, reading and reseaching, or helping patrons' with their research, so I hope to expand Wikipedia's collection. I study physical science, pedagogy, Deutsch and mathematics at Appalachian State University. Hi Justin :) my pleasure to meet you. Sorry if I stepped on your toes, and thanks for inviting me to this discussion.

Essentially, my changes were a question of style. I tried to correct what I felt was inferior wording, add details that were relevant and/or would help the reader understand, and also adhere to the WP guidelines for this project. The points you brought up, as I understand them, are:

(1) Use of JW words such as "publisher", "pioneer", "branch overseer", etc. Why not include a phrase such as "known by the Witnesses as a "pioneer" or some such phrase, just for clarity's sake. I don't feel that including the unfamiliar JW term in a sentence which uses a well-known term is sufficient to inform the reader that the JW term is synonymic to the well-known term; it is not "defining" the term. Your method is similar to some of the proverbs; not all people understand that one half of the sentence illuminates, or helps to explain, the other half. I know I didn't, until I got much older; however, students (and I suspect that many of them will be coming here to WP) are not very old. If you feel that "religion" is more appropriate than "religious group", it is not an issue for me; it was a matter of style to me. "Organization" is not specific to Jehovah's Witnesses, despite the fact that its use is common within the JW community; the term relates to any and all organized groups, and the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is included in that category.

(2) Reference to Knorr as the final word on submitted articles. I am probably in error there. I've read both of Franz's books, and many sections of them twice or three times. But I haven't read any parts of them in the last year, and so I edited that sentence from what I thought I knew, from memory. It was most likely Karl Adams responsibility. But I know that some of the writing department's work went to Knorr, because on one occasion he brought it to Fred Franz and asked, 'What do we do now?' (I think that was related to the restructuring of the organization in 1976). I meant to bring the books home from my place of employment today, but forgot. I'll check them again tomorrow.

Franz's footnote on page 187 of "In Search of Christian Freedom" states, "...there were three persons whose signatures were required on all material for publication: those of Nathan Knorr, Fred Franz, and Karl Adams." Whether Knorr or F. Franz actually read all of the material before giving their approval is questionable. Franz makes it apparent in "Crisis of Conscience" that Adams had his subordinates submit their work to him 'for editing and approval' (pages 24 and 25), and that Adams sometimes brought their work to the attention of Knorr (pages 26 and 27). So it seems that Adams authority to approve content was limited, and that Knorr expected to be informed in instances where those limitations were reached.

It seems that we are left with a cloudy situation, my friend :). Express it in any manner you like.

I just checked the article and found that some semi-reverts have been made since last night, ostensibly in the pursuit of a finer article. I am all in favor of that, and yet so many errors have been introduced by these changes that I tend to think that there is an ego problem involved. I don't want to waste my time arguing with editors who introduce errors and do not check their work simply because they want it done their way. For instance, Ray Franz does not have to be addressed as "Raymond Franz" throughout the article. The article is titled "Raymond Franz". We all know it is about Raymond Franz. The only time it is necessary to make a distinction between the two Franzs is when Fred Franz is being spoken about; then it is appropriate to write HIS full name in the article. This is rather rudimentary, yet some editor insists on doing it 'his way'.

I don't have a lot of time to spend on Wikipedia. I don't want to waste it in endless discussions about why such-and-such an edit is right or wrong. I'd prefer to work with editors who are more knowledgeable, such as yourself, and devote what time I have to quality edits. In the spirit of Wikipedia :). --RogerK 01:26, 30 June 2006 (UTC)reply

Project News This is the first newsletter of the LGBT studies Wikiproject! Come and discuss your thoughts on it at the Wikiproject talk page. An LGBT Barnstar has been created for editors who have contributed significantly to LGBT-related articles. The LGBT Portal has been revamped and tidied. It's various sections could do with updating on a weekly basis. Please pitch in if you have the time. The main page of the Wikiproject has also undergone a bit of a rewrite. Your participation is welcome. James Robert Baker became the first known LGBT biography to become a Featured Article on November 22. It was written and nominated by Jeffpw. Well done Jeff! A discussion has been started on the WikiProject talk page about how to get the WikiProject going. Your thoughts would be welcome. A new assessment system has been implemented - we have tagged and assessed over 1100 articles so far! Announcement: If someone requests help or feedback on an article, please try your hardest to help them out if you are able. Thank you. Project News The LGBT Portal has once again been revamped and a work rota started. Efforts towards Featured Portal status are slowly coming together. The assessment system has been a great success, we have tagged over 4000 articles! Please tag any LGBT related articles you come across by adding {{LGBTProject | class=}} to the talkpage. Please see the Assessment Department for how to assess an article according to the grading system. The Translation department has changed its focus, to LGBT articles about non-English topics and people on which there may be more information on the relevant foreign Wikipedia. Please add your name if you are fluent in any language other than English. Jumpaclass is picking up slowly, with nine people having entered. With over 2000 stubs we need to improve our article quality. Please sign up and get it going! Challenge another user to see how far you can jump a stub! There is an ongoing discussion about the current LGBT categorisation system here, here, and a little bit here. A special page has now been set up here to deal with this. A Watchlist has been set up to monitor controversial and/or highly vandalised articles. It can also be used for article disputes, just add a note explaining the nature of the dispute. With the influx of so many active members, there is now enough support for a LGBT studies peer review, which may be found here. It's in the beta phase at the moment, so bear with us if we make any mistakes. Feel free to peer review any articles you have been working on. It was agreed this month to start reducing the uses of the Notice board, as many members felt that it was not effective. An open tasks template has been created, bringing together important announcements, FAC/FARs, Peer reviews, XfDs, the COTM, and requested articles. You may desire to watchlist it. A Deletion sorting subpage is also now working to bring together XfDs - this should be bot-driven, but we have not currently tagged enough articles to make this fully automated, so please update the list with any LGBT-related XfDs you come across. Article news Two articles were recently shepherded through the Featured Article process by two of our members - Same-sex marriage in Spain and The Well of Loneliness. Good luck! Project News With such rapid development of the project, it was decided that a Coordinator was needed to ensure all the fiddly maintenence was kept up. Elections were held and Dev920 (talk · contribs) has been elected Coordinator for the next three months. She said "I am honoured and proud to be at the helm of such a fantastic WikiProject and look forward to our future". Congratulations Dev! The assessment system continues to be a great success, we have tagged over 5200 articles! Please tag any LGBT related articles you come across by adding {{LGBTProject | class=}} to the talkpage. Please see the Assessment Department for how to assess an article according to the grading system. Jumpaclass is proving to be quite successful! The winner at the end of the year gets to pick the January collaboration, so sign up and get going! Or challenge another user to see how far you can jump a stub! A new Community department has been set up to foster community amongst our members. It mostly acts as other WikiProjects' Outreach department, but also has a Quilt to which every member is entitled to add a square containing anything of their choice. The peer review is not getting much custom - please notice you can cross-list other peer reviews from different projects that also fall within our scope. Many people still seem to be unaware that the Deletion sorting subpage exists for XfDs to be listed: please use and watch that page instead of issuing "alerts" for ordinary AfDs on the project talkpage. WP:FILM has a current drive to give every film article an infobox. WP:LGBT successfully gave all 105 LGBT infoboxless films infoboxes, so a big thank you to everyone who participated. A new template, LGBT, has been created for articles which are becoming to cluttered with infoboxes. Thanks to WJBscribe and SatyrTN for creating it. A very basic resources page has been started. Please add to it as you come across useful sites. A promotional poster for the project has been created: http://wplgbt.tripod.com/Wikipedianeedsyou.doc (you have to directly cut and paste the url, or it won't let you download it). Please distribute anywhere and everywhere you desire, such as gay libraries, cybercafes, community centres and so on. Also, please let Dev920 know where you have put it up, so she can keep track of our coverage. An LGBT Publications Taskforce has been proposed. Please sign up here if you are interested in being involved. An LGBT WikiProject has been set up on the Spanish Wikipedia! Set up by Raystorm, it has already gained six members and is developing an assessment system. If you speak any Spanish, please consider going up and lending a hand if you can! Issue V - April 3, 2007 Monthly Challenge: Article News Three articles were promoted to Featured Article status this month: Homer's Phobia (2007-03-26), Trembling Before G-d (2007-03-15) and Andrew Van De Kamp (2007-03-30). Congratulations to Gran2 and Dev920 (twice!) respectively for all their hard work! Three new articles appeared on the Main Page as Did you know? items: Classification of transsexuals (2007-03-02), Steve Stanton (2007-03-08) and Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus (2007-03-23), started by Lwollert, Yksin and MusicMen, respectively. DavidShankBone deserves kudos for his current drive to provide quality LGBT photos from the NYC area. One of the more recent photos is posted on Michael Musto, and you can check out the gallery on David's user page. Project News There is now the beginning of a list of core topics to possibly be included in the Wikipedia 1.0 release. Your suggestions are welcome; there may be many core LGBT topics still missing. We have a list of people categorized as LGBT whose articles need to be checked for reliable sourcing. This effort is necessary and urgent, to comply with Wikipedia's policy on living persons. Please take a few moments to source one article; if you've got time, do another. SatyrTN identified all the articles that were in subcategories of Category:LGBT but not yet tagged with the project's banner, about 1,400 articles. These have been completed, though SatyrBot will make periodic runs through the cats to find any new entries. Thanks Satyr! The number of articles within our project's spectrum (6,667 currently) should now be relatively stable and only grow with article creation. However, if you find a category that should be included, please let SatyrTN know so it can be included in the bots runs. Work is underway to improve the LGBT Portal. Please add any good quality (free) photos you come across on LGBT articles to the gallery here. Also if anyone would like to volunteer to help in maintaining the portal, please make yourselves known on the Portal's talkpage.
