Statue of Queen Victoria

Resolved

I just posted a statue at List of statues of Queen Victoria for Sri Lanka, in Colombe, but it showed up in Africa. I have to leave 4 minutes ago. Can someone either fix it or remove it? Einar ak Carptrash (talk) 00:59, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

I have closed the table and added the sculptor. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:23, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
Added a pic from flickr and a reference. Hope I got the right statue. Chamal TC 02:56, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

Copyvio

I found some blatant copyvio, and don't know what to do about it (except report it here):

  • Compare this edit: → to this page in book: — (Both, at: Historical Background)
Note, there are several similar edits at this editor's contributions.
~Regards, 74.60.29.141 (talk) 02:22, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
Please report it to Wikipedia:Copyright problems--SPhilbrick(Talk) 11:44, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
I glanced at the edit, and did not see the overlap with the book, although I was not able to see the page that came up, so the Google snippet may just not be available for me. If there are five or fewer examples, please report each to Wikipedia:Copyright problems. If there are more than five examples of copyvios, please report in bulk to Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 11:51, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
I started an "investigation", but don't have the time or patience to jump thru the hoops, and have not posted; however, it is unambiguous that the editor has many such contributions (I checked the 1st 3, with 3/3 positive; following the "rule of three", I believe this is a trend.)
  • Multiple large blocks of text copied verbatim from copyrighted book(s) – "© Mohammad Saed Abdul Rahman 2009; All rights reserved."

Incorrect informationedit

This page has incorrect information. "Herman Norman Orenstein (* 19451 in Toronto2) ist ein kanadischer Komponist." is incorrect. As I do not understand German, I cannot correct. Correct information would be "Norman Orenstein (Toronto).

Can you please help by deleting "Herman" and "1945"?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.116.242.24 (talk) 02:54, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

Automatic logging in to Wikimedia's projectsedit

Resolved

After successful logging in to Wikipedia the Login successful page says:

'Logging you in to Wikimedia's other projects'

and it displays a row of icons of those projects, with Commons and Wikidata among them. However when I switch to one of those projects it appears I'm not logged in there. How can I achieve a real single login? Or how can I get rid of that false message? --CiaPan (talk) 06:28, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply
Similar question was asked before – Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2008 August 31#Featured picture has a wrong link to its candidate page – but got no reply.)

One possible reason is that your browser can't store the cookies for the other sites. I don't allow my browser to store cookies from random sites, and have an explicit whitelist of allowed sites. So if I jump from here to, say, the Chinese Wikipedia, I won't be logged in when I get there. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:01, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply
Bingo! That's it, I've added wikidata, commons and wikipedia domains to the white list and it works now. Thak you. --CiaPan (talk) 19:31, 26 March 2013 (UTC)reply

Regarding review of my article on Cullen Investmentsedit

Hi,

Could you please confirm the estimated time period required for the approval of the uploaded article (Cullen Investments) which is in the review que for weeks (article was submitted for review on 11 March, 2013).

Your earliest response will be much appreciated

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ingoddess2805 (talkcontribs) 06:31, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

The article has not been submitted for review, and is currently just sitting there waiting for you to finish creating it. You need to click on the link in the box at the top to submit it. Rojomoke (talk) 07:45, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply
The article has a 'Not submitted' tag at the top, and four 'Review waiting' tags at the bottom. I doubt that this can be right. Maproom (talk) 07:58, 25 March 2013 (UTC) Moreover it is on the talk page of a blank article page. Maproom (talk) 08:04, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply
The draft has been in the queue since 8 March. It's common for a draft to have more than one "submission" box; I thought a bot cleaned those up, but apparently not. And "Articles for creation" drafts do live in the "Wikipedia talk" namespace, because unregistered editors only have the software permission to create talk pages.
I don't think the draft has much chance of being accepted in its current form. Reference 1 looks like an entry in a business directory, references 2 and 6 are to the company's own website, and references 3, 4 and 5 do not mention Cullen Investments by name. A Wikipedia article needs to show "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject", and I don't see that here. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:34, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

Tool to find edit history intersectionedit

Is there a history tool to use to remind yourself of what pages your edits and another Wikipedian have intersected on including conversations between the two of you on a talk page? Alatari (talk) 07:46, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

From Wikipedia:Tools:
  • Intersect Contribs – compares the edits of two editors in any Wikimedia Foundation wiki to see which articles overlap
  • Wikistalk – similar to Intersect Contribs, allows comparisons between more than two users and namespace selection, works only on the English Wikipedia
  • Editor Interaction Analyzer, shows the common pages that two editors have both edited, sorted by minimum time between edits by both users. Only works on the English Wikipedia.
-- John of Reading (talk) 07:57, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

Thankyou! Alatari (talk) 08:39, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

I have a follow up question. Is there a way to quickly pinpoint the exact edit you made over a several year time span in a heavily edited talk page or article especially one that has 30 or 50 archive pages built up? Alatari (talk) 09:26, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

One way is to search for your user name in the archives, either by using the archive search box if there is one, or Special:PrefixIndex if not. Alternatively, this tool could help. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:20, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

Copyright questionedit

Dear editors: I came across this page Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator which has substantial content, about half, taken from the web site http://lifevest.zoll.com/news/fact-sheet.asp There are subtle differences here and there, for example taking out the product name and replacing it with generic name. How exact does text have to be to be a copyright violation? —Anne Delong (talk) 11:06, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

It does not have to be an exact match. In cases where the entire article, or virtually the entire article is the same, and the source is not licensed, you can add a CSD G12, and an admin will delete, if appropriate.
In other cases, report to Wikipedia:Copyright problems, and someone will eventually review it (There is a backlog). For confirmation that the words do not have to be an exact match, see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing--SPhilbrick(Talk) 11:40, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

Remove unrelated image from a Wikipedia pageedit

Hi, I've been searching for how to remove an image, namely, Knee_highs.JPG from the Knee Highs page, since this is an image of knee high socks, not knee highs. I've been looking for how to do this for ~30 minutes with no luck. I'm not looking to delete it from the Commons, just disconnect it from the Knee Highs page. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.180.8.252 (talk) 13:10, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

You can click the "Edit" tab at top of Knee highs and remove the image code in the first line. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:02, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply
What is the difference between a "knee high" and a "knee high sock"? The article does not indicate any. Maproom (talk) 14:23, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply
There is a noun missing - Knee high <something that is not a sock>. Roger (talk) 18:00, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

YouTube referencing overkilledit

Charles E. Moody

Don't know what to make of this, the first thing that struck me was the over-reffing, scrolling down there are a ton of YT videos being used as refs. In fact, someone playing a recorded original version of one of Moody's songs, apparently, so the video is not copyright violating I guess, what about the sound recordings? And is this necessary or desirable for the article? Cheers! CaptainScreebo Parley! 14:12, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

WP:YOUTUBE is the relevant bit of the external links policy, but WP:VIDEOREF might be of more use if you get around to evaluating their use as references in the article. Astronaut (talk) 20:00, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

Giving Recognition to Other Writersedit

Hi Folks: I did some editing over on my Linked-In page and included the articles and URL-s that I am editing. Then I realized that its not fair to not give proper recognition to other editors and the person who originated the article. Can someone give me some guidance about how most folks approach this matter? I'm sure that people before me put a lot of work into these articles in starting them up and I don't want to represent what I am doing as though all this hard work has been mine alone. Thoughts?? Best Wishes.--Bruce W Sims (talk) 14:25, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

I took a look at your LinkedIn page. I have no idea how others who list Wikipedia contributions there do it, but how about placing in the Authors: section, after your name, something like "and other Wikipedia contributors"?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:51, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

Coding expert needededit

I need someone with coding knowledge to tweak Template:CBB Seasons Cat Header. You see, it's placed at the very top of each yearly subcategory of Category:College men's basketball seasons in the United States, but depending on which season category it's in, the official name of that college basketball season might be different. I need that template to reflect the following information:

  • 1895–96 through 1905–06: "(year) collegiate men's basketball season in the United States"
  • 1906–07 through 1909–10: "(year) IAAUS men's basketball season"
  • 1910–11 through 1955–56: "(year) NCAA men's basketball season"
  • 1956–57 through 1972–73: "(year) NCAA University Division men's basketball season"
  • 1973–74 through present: "(year) NCAA Division I men's basketball season"

Can someone please make this template reflect that when it's placed on their season subcategories? Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 15:39, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

Working on it. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:23, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply
It appears the main problem was a missing " in the United States" at the end of category names for start year <= 1905. I fixed this and a couple of other issues. Are there remaining issues? PrimeHunter (talk) 17:23, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Why does the watchlist fail?edit

Another user replied to me on their talk page and even though they are on my watchlist and I sorted the list specifically by user talk page items it will not show up. The only reason I found out he responded is because in my watchlist some other editor added a new comment to his talk page. This kind of error was happening years ago and it's not fixed? I fuddled about with all the settings and don't see what I can do to resolve this on my end. Alatari (talk) 16:33, 25 March 2013 (UTC)reply

commercial movie on first aviators (possibly Gustav Whitehead) Movie produced in the 1930's or 40'sedit

Help can anyone verify that a commercial movie was made in the 1930's or 40's on the first manned flight which occurred before the Wright brothers achievements.

When I was a kid 13 or 14 years old circia 1958, I vaguely recall such a film on late nite TV. I sear the aviators name was Montgmery.

Printing problem at Seven Virtuesedit

Folks, a user has reported to OTRS a printing problem with the above article:

When printing a copy of pages 2-3-4 and 5 of the main subject "seven virtues" they are mostly blank or have just a few lines at the top. A fix would help me greatly to insure that there is no missing information.
