Brian Peppers

Comprehensively rejected at WP:DRV
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

I tried to create a page for Brian Peppers. It was protected and I was unable. This is a popular and important deceased person who has significant coverage in various publications. I tried to nominate it for deletion review in 2007 and my request was denied. It has been a long time so I am hoping bias here has decreased. How can I create this important article? Pilotbob (talk) 03:35, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

There very little chance that Wikipedia will permit an article on the subject of Brian Peppers to be created. Articles have repeatedly been deleted, per community consensus, and nothing has changed in Wikipedia policy which is likely to change that situation. And no, the article isn't 'important' - internet memes rarely are. AndyTheGrump (talk)
This article was deleted by Jimbo, back when he did more of that sort of thing, and re-deleted by several prominent admins after much discussion -- and apparntly a fair amount of opposition. Pilotbob, I suspect that Andy is correct above. But if you really think that a valid article can be created about a sex offender known mostly for his deformities, you could create Draft:Brian Peppers. There you could show that a well-sourced, neutral article that demonstrates notability and does not violate other Wikipedia policies can be created. If you manage to do that, you could post at WP:DRV and point to the draft as an argument to allow the article. I doubt that it can be done, but you could try. DES (talk) 04:50, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Please can you check the refs on the page - Summer heights High; there is problem with the reference numbers 19 and 20. thanks Steve 4245 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.228.42.83 (talk) 07:48, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Fixed ref 20. A date was given as "May 11 2013", where "11 May 2013" is the expected format. Maproom (talk) 07:55, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
I don't see a problem with 19, but I do with 9-15. The access dates are all the same as the publication dates, all back in 2007. The access date is supposed to eb the (most recent) date that the article editor/drafter visited the reference source and verified that it supports the facts listed in the article. Was that really last done back in 2007? I suspect a misunderstanding of the accessdate parameter here. DES (talk) 12:23, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Radio Yorkshire

Hi,

Could you please remove the information about Ken Bates and the ownership of the station and any reference to Ken Bates.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.35.11.178 (talk) 08:35, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

The article uses references to cite that information. So it wouldn't be removed. --Fauzan✆ talk✉ mail 08:39, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
But it was removed, by an unregistered user. I have restored it. Maproom (talk) 09:02, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
And I've archived the references because local newspapers tend to remove content after a number of years. - X201 (talk) 09:17, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

I have a photo and don't know what category to put it underedit

I have taken a photo of a 'church' from the outside. Do I class this as:

  1. free work,
  2. copyrighted, non-free work, but Fair Use
  3. or Non-Free Content

I'm using the File Upload Wizard and need to put it under a category. Thanks. In Citer (talk) 09:29, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

You're the photographer, you decide. It probably won't be able to be used on Wikipedia if you choose to copyright it so I suggest you head over to commons:Special:UploadWizard and follow the guide. CC BY 3.0 is a good, free license to use. Scarce2 (talk) 09:34, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
@In Citer: The answer may also depend on which country you are in and the age of the building; see Commons:Commons:Freedom of panorama. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:51, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
Thanks a lot. In Citer (talk) 09:59, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
Just to clarify, "copyright" and "use on Wikipedia" are not mutually exclusive. The creator of an image (in the absence of an agreement with someone else to the contrary) owns the copyright to any image they create. Licensing such an image on terms acceptable to Wikipedia does not extinguish the copyright. The CC licenses (like any other license) merely specify the terms on which use by others is permitted.--ukexpat (talk) 12:09, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
Exactly. In Citer, if you are uploading your own work to Wikipedia (unless it as a derivitive work subject to someone else's copyright) you should most oftne choose "free work". Free here does not mean uncopyrighted, but rather freely licensed (or in the public domain). Or, if your are going to freely license it, upload to commons as Scarce2 suggested. On www.betaarchive.com I can see the Wikipedia logo. They can use? --93.144.125.157 (talk) 09:36, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

I've let Wikimedia's legal team know via email about it. While minor, it looks like a trademark violation to me, but that'll be up to the Wikimedia Foundation to pursue. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 16:40, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

Protection padlock botedit

Is the bot that adds padlock icons to protected pages without padlocks still running? If so, what's its name? --NeilN talk to me 14:18, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

Cyberbot II and Lowercase sigmabot. Wikipedia:Bots/Status suggests they are both still active, although Lowercase sigmabot hasn't edited anything since last year. - X201 (talk) 15:57, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
X201, thanks. Looks like neither one will add a padlock to a fully protected redirected template and mess it up. --NeilN talk to me 16:40, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

Kelly Gallagher's birthplaceedit

For information, Kelly is a cousin to my wife, contrary to the information given, Kelly was not born in Bangor, Northern Ireland, she was in fact born in London, both her parents were born in the Republic of Ireland.

I have spoken to Kelly re the information on Wiki and she is quite content for the information to be updated / amended.

Best regards

I've removed it. It wasn't supported by the reference. I think someone confused "Home Town" in the reference as a synonym for "place of birth". - X201 (talk) 14:43, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

Bold textedit

Can anyone explain how Bold text is displayed at the bottom of DRDO light tank and Kartik BLT? Rcsprinter123 (proclaim) @ 14:48, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

@Rcsprinter: I purged both articles and the text disappeared. Looks like it came from some transcluded template which was fixed. --NeilN talk to me 15:00, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

cant post pet add on your websiteedit

I cannot post pet adds on your website it shows my add has been flagged and removed why I don't understand other people are posting pet adds on your site I don't think I have done anything wrong to not be able to post or I am not aware of it could you please tell me why I cant post and help me fix this sincerely mary chrisman — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.28.223.140 (talk) 15:48, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

If I understand your note correctly, you appear to have been trying to post advertisements for pet animals. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising. If other people have been posting pet ads, they also should not have been doing that. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:00, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. -- GB fan 16:04, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
Another possibility is that the person saw a mirror site. Anyone can copy content from Wikipedia and make it look like a Wikipedia article as long as they follow the rules about attribution and copyright. There have been reports of ad-supported web sites that look like Wikipedia.
And some people have seen ads due to malware.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 21:59, 12 June 2015 (UTC)reply

The Cultural Competency Organizational Assessment-360 (COA360)edit

The website URL is The Cultural Competency Organizational Assessment-360 (COA360)

Why is this page being viewed as promotional content/advertisement? Unsure as to what edits to make to remove that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.129.44.19 (talk) 16:31, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

A normal person reading that page will think "what a load of promotional bullshit". I am surprised you can't see that for yourself. Maproom (talk) 16:44, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
To remove the banner, one should find the third party reliable sources that discuss the subject and then present that as the content of the article in a neutral tone in a manner that represents the positive and negative views of the subject rather than promotional fluffery such as one that reads as if it is a free duplicate of the subjects website. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:04, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

Best Regards

Hello Hugo. I can't tell which page/article this is, since leaving the above msg is the only thing you have done using the above IP address. Note that most Wikipedia pages are actually articles, or they are supposed to be. An article should have references cited to verify statements made in it, and to demonstrated the notability of the subject, under the WP:GNG. Articles with few or no references are often deleted. See Referencing for Beginners for more information on references and how to add them. DES (talk) 18:50, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
You should also be aware of our policy for people who have a conflict of interest with regard to a subject of an article. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 04:05, 12 June 2015 (UTC)reply

Category moves?edit

I would like to move Category:9x21mm_IMI_firearms to Category:9×21mm_IMI_firearms ("x" vs "×"), as that is the proper title. Do I have to change the category manually on the affected pages? Is there a bot that will do it for me? Can I use an AWB-like tool instead? Thanks. Faceless Enemy (talk) 23:34, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply

@Faceless Enemy: Category moves have to be discussed first. See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:49, 11 June 2015 (UTC)reply
This is a typographical error fix, not a "real" move. Faceless Enemy (talk) 00:08, 12 June 2015 (UTC)reply
It still needs to go through the process, but it might qualify for speedy renaming (reason C2C). See the guidance and instructions at WP:CFDS RudolfRed (talk) 00:27, 12 June 2015 (UTC)reply
To answer the last question, yes, AWB can do that change. Dismas|(talk) 00:58, 12 June 2015 (UTC)reply
