In the news

The main page has a section In the news. This 2016 Pathankot attack must be there. --Marvel Hero (talk) 01:22, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

There was no consensus to post that. See this. --Majora (talk) 01:31, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

Pronunciation guide

I'm not really sure if this is the appropriate place for this question, but it concerns a policy about pronunciation of articles. Usually, in fact almost always, the name of an article is followed by a note, usually in italics, about how to pronounce the title word of an article. For example, a word like puppet may be rendered like this: Puppet (pup-pet) It seems that Wikipedia no longer shows how to pronounce it's words anymore. Why is that?— Preceding unsigned comment added by VirginiaBoy (talkcontribs)

There has been no change in policy or practice. As with most things on Wikipedia, such pronunciation guides are added by users. If there is no guide, it just hasn't been added yet.--ukexpat (talk) 04:18, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
I'd add that pronunciations are more common on words that would be less familiar. See Sabot, for example, and the IPA pronunciation there (hover over the individual symbols or click on it). Rwessel (talk) 05:01, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

Redirect

hi,

i want https://bn.wikipedia.org/s/6yx5 page to redirect to https://bn.wikipedia.org/s/6yws

  1. REDIRECT target I am using #REDIRECT গুল্ম but it is not working. please help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Justbublin (talkcontribs) 07:04, January 4, 2016 (UTC)
@Justbublin: It did not work because you are on the English Wikipedia. We can only really help you with questions about the English Wikipedia. Please try again on the actual page you are trying to edit in the Bengali Wikipedia. --Majora (talk) 07:13, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
@Justbublin: A redirect should have #REDIRECT targetname at the start of the first line. Your page creation had a lot of other code in 1, maybe because you apparently used the ContentTranslation tool. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:20, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

Getting Access to Semi-Protected Pageedit

Hello, I'm not too sure if this is the right place to ask as I've just joined Wikipedia. I'm happy to help and edit pages to do with Rangers F.C. but the actual Rangers F.C. wiki page is semi-protected until 2017. I was wondering of there is a way that I would be able to edit the page, therefore be able to add more information to the page? Thanks, --StevenRFC1872 (talk) 13:54, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

You need to make just eight more edits to unprotected articles, and to wait until January 8th, then you will be an "autoconfirmed user". See Vandalism on Wikipedia for an explanation of why this wait is necessary on some articles. Meanwhile, if you see mistakes in an article and are impatient to put them right, just point them out on the talk page of the article. Dbfirs 14:04, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

Centering templates in a tableedit

I have a table on my userpage with templates in and I would like to centre the templates in the cells of the table. How do I do this? Thanks Tom29739 (talk) 14:35, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

@Tom29739: The used templates don't seem suited for a table. Does 2 look like you want? PrimeHunter (talk) 15:19, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply
That looks right. Thanks. Tom29739 (talk) 15:30, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

How to add a pictureedit

Hi,

I was trying to edit the page Maciej Gostomski and add a more recent picture with his newest club but couldn't figure out how to do so. I was wondering if you could tell me how please, thanks a lot.

StevenRFC1872 (talk) 14:47, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

Where is the picture that you would like to add? Maproom (talk) 15:24, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply
(edit conflict) Hello, StevenRFC1872. Pictures are one of the trickier bits of editing Wikipedia for two reasons. One is that it is a two-step process: first you must upload the picture to Wikipemia Commons (or in certain circumtances to Wikipedia itself) and then you can use it in an article. The other, big, reason, is that copyright can be a minefield. Almost all material in Wikipedia, including most pictures, is required to be available for anybody to reuse for any purpose: this requires that to use a picture the copyright owner must explicitly have released it into the public domain, or under a suitable licence such as WP:CC-BY-SA. (The exceptions to this have quite strict conditions, and almost never apply to pictures of living people). So the immediate question is, where did you get the picture you want to use? If you took it yourself, then you are probably the copyright owner, and you have the power to release it under such a licence: the Upload wizard will tell you how to do so. If you did not take the picture yourself, the only way would be to persuade the copyright owner to go through the process in donating copyright materials (which they may or may not be willing to do). If it is a picture you found on the web somewhere, you probably can't use it. (This is why so many pictures of living people either lack pictures or don't have a recent one, by the way: because nobody has found or taken a picture that does meet Wikimedia's criteria for copyright). --ColinFine (talk) 15:26, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

Referencing questionedit

The article Ammersee has this1 as its second reference. The spelling "Difussion" is clearly a mistake,2 but reproduces the mistake on the Google Books page that it cites. Should we go with the original work (inaccessible by me), or with Google's mis-spelling? Maproom (talk) 14:49, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

  1. ^ The Penny Cyclopaedia of the Society for the Difussion of Useful Knowledge. Charles Knight. 1835. pp. 51–. {{cite book}}: Cite has empty unknown parameters: |laydate=, |laysummary=, |trans_title=, and |authormask= (help)
  2. ^ "Plate from Family Atlas by S.D.U.K."
Original work (title page is here: https://books.google.com/books?id=2C89LepPuvsC&pg=PP7) spells it 'Diffusion'. It could be that someday Google will realize the error of their ways and fix the error.

Diff Problemsedit

I have encountered a recent bug, hope someone can help me out here. It goes like this:

When looking at a diff, it loads the persons diff BEFORE the other diff was made. Example:

  • User A makes edit at 6:30
  • User B makes edit at 6:35
  • User: F makes edit at 6:55
  • User C clicks on the 'diff' button next to the edit info of user B's edit.
  • Diff loads User A's edit.
  • The diff of User B's edit is shown at User F's edit diff.

Is this happening for anyone else? Does anyone else have a suggestion? Thanks. - DragTails - 16:48, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

I haven't seen this. Please post an example. Give the url of page with the diff link, and the url in your browser after clicking the link. Also name your browser and skin. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:50, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

Never mind, it seems to be fixed now. - DragTails - 20:40, 6 January 2016 (UTC)reply

For which article?Naraht (talk) 16:55, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply
The relevant article is Ravi Agrawal, which the editor wanted to rename to Ravi Agrawal (CNN) (against policy, and after they had created another page at the proposed target via a copy/paste move which is now flagged for deletion). General Ization Talk 19:21, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

The error message says "Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).", and in the message the words "help page" are in blue to indicate that they are a wikilink to a help page with further information if you need it. - David Biddulph (talk) 17:31, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

Need to change title of a pageedit

This is about the Team Foundation Server page. We'd like to change the title of this page to better reflect the name of the product we now lead with i.e. Visual Studio Team Services. Team Foundation Server is a sister product that has the exact same capabilities but we want to mention it as such in the article instead of using it as the title. Can you please help us with changing the title? - Ayush Jain — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aupsy (talkcontribs) 19:01, 4 January 2016‎ (UTC)reply

Who is "we"? And where can a reliable, published source be found that confirms that Microsoft has changed the name of this product? Please provide a link to that source. The current article describes TFS as a product available in two versions. Only one of those versions is known as Visual Studio Team Services. What will probably make more sense is to create a redirect from that name to the existing article. General Ization Talk 19:08, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply
Which has been done at Visual Studio Team Services. General Ization Talk 19:12, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply
The subject article extensively describes TFS and its versions, not the other product you would prefer to lead with. I suggest that you may want to replace the redirect I created with an article that talks at equal length about VSTS (with a link to the TFS article), but unless and until you do, the redirect will hold its place. General Ization Talk 19:35, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply
And while you say "we", only one person can be Aupsy.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 23:26, 6 January 2016 (UTC)reply

Leo Dunson pageedit

Hi,

I've tried to figure out how to request an article, but just can't seem to get it.

I'd like to request an article be written about Leo Dunson, a rapper and US Army veteran. His music videos have reached about 1M views in total on YouTube, but have never reached any kind of commercial success.

I don't know Mr. Dunson nor have I ever met him; I just really enjoy his music.

Here are some news stories/interviews about him:

How do I make an IMDb link work correctly?edit

Please see this article: Tony Orlando. In the External links section, there are two links for IMDb. One is for the man, Tony Orlando, and the other is for his TV show. Why is the second one not acting properly? It shows the name "Tony Orlando" instead of the proper name of "Tony Orlando and Dawn". But, if you click the link, it does go to the correct IMDb page. What's going on? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 23:21, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply

Because of the way the template {{iMDB title}} is written. I think, on a quick look, that if an explicit title parameter is not given to this template, then it uses the name of the article in which the template is used. --ColinFine (talk) 23:46, 4 January 2016 (UTC)reply
That is correct ColinFine. I have applied the appropriate fix to the EL in question. Cheers to you both. MarnetteD|Talk 00:12, 5 January 2016 (UTC)reply
